Scarce Enoch Burnett 1 Gallon Cobalt Decorated Crock

Circa 1850s: In his article "Washington, D.C. Stoneware," noted early American stoneware author Brandt Zipp contends that "it would be hard to overstate the importance of... Enoch Burnett... to the history of Mid-Atlantic stoneware manufacture." Zipp tells us that Burnett purchased Richard Butt's Washington D.C. maufactory in 1846 and "continued to run the pottery well after the Civil War." Because Burnett did not sign his work, examples attributed to him are scarce and must be attributed by those intimately familiar with his work. This fine one gallon semi-ovoid storage jar has been attributed to Enoch Burnett during his ownership of the DC pottery by Brandt Zipp himself. Measuring 9.5" inches tall, this storage jar features tab handle with attractive swag and hanging flower decoration on both sides and is in excellent condition with a chip to one handle, a couple minor rim nicks, and no cracks or repairs.
