Circa 1879-1897: Since our recent relocation to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, we have kept on the hunt for interesting examples of stoneware from our region, and this large 14.5" tall four gallon signed J.M. Hickerson Strasburg VA storage jar with fantastic dark blue freehand floral decoration on both sides is a sight to behold. Hickerson is known to have produced highly decorated crockery, and this is clearly evident when examining the decorator's wide brushstrokes and thickly applied cobalt on this jar. One should also keep in mind that Shenandoah Valley stoneware articles of four gallons and above are difficult to find and considered scarce. Condition is excellent with typical minor chipping around the rim and one minor underglaze firing line that does go through and no other issues. The jar rings when tapped.
