Circa 1820s: The States pattern, also called America and Independence, is perhaps the most popular series of dark blue historical Stafforshire created for the Ameircan market by English brothers James and Ralph Clews. The names of fifteen American states are sparated by patriotic stars and are festooned around a piece's border. The firm produced over a dozen romantic views for the central medallion which included the figures George Washington, Justice, and Liberty and an assortment of fruits and flowers. All of the scenes portray the romantic vision of the lushness and wealth of the American countryside. This 8" dark blue salad plate features the scene Two Story Building with Curved Drive. Its condition is excellent with no chips, cracks, or repairs and only typical short knife marks on the front and minor expected shelf wear on the back. Smaller plates are more difficult to find than their larger siblings and this one has a crisp transfer. It is easy to see why this series was so popular to the citizens of a fledgling nation, citizens who were proud of their lofty democratic ideals and the prosperity of their rapidly expanding territories.
