The tight weave on this 6 1/8” long x 6 1/2” high buttocks basket with 32 ribs on each side (64 ribs total!) is absolutely breathtaking and gives the basket a sculptural appeal that elevates it to a top notch piece of high country Southern folk art and demonstrates why Mary Shelton (1837-1921) and her sister Eliza (1845-1933) are arguably considered the most important and skilled Southern basket makers known.
