Circa 1870: Southwest Pennsylvania stoneware covered in freehand cobalt decoration is always in demand among discerning collectors, and this three gallon jar has all the bells and whistles: stripes, squiggles, flowers, vines, and a beautifully done three gallon capacity mark. Furthermore, the crock is in superb as made condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs and only the usual minor firing anomalies one typically finds on stoneware from the third quarter of the 19th century. This attractive jar was most likely thrown in Greensboro PA and is most likely a product of Leet Hamilton or one of the other early Greene County potters.
