Circa 1878: Standing nearly 8" tall on a 5.5" wide base, John Girard’s highly detailed Pelican mechanical bank was manufactured by Cromwell, Connecticut bank giant J. and E. Stevens Company and depicts a realistically portrayed pelican who has captured a comically portrayed Middle Eastern gentleman in its mouth. This bank has beautifully japanned finish and retains over 90% of its original finish, with most of the wear to the Arab gentleman and to the sides of the base. This is an outstanding example of a hard to find 19th century cast iron mechanical bank.
