Circa 1878-1880: According to author and West Virginia pottery expert Jim Stage, J.M. Harden ran the Palatine Pottery Company "located between Polk & Ferry Streets, which adjacent to the Monongahela River, which separated the towns of Palatine and Fairmont, WV" (The Donaghho Story 85). Some of the most desirable crockery from this firm include items with stencil decorated pears, dogs, and ponies. This large one gallon stoneware wax sealer with pear decoration is a fine specimen of the company's output. It has a a clear, crisp stencil and has survived in as made condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs and only typical firing anomalies. It will be difficult to find a cleaner or more attractive example on the open market.
