Circa 1890-1920: Virginians love their painted baskets, and this stunning lidded sewing basket in original apple green paint most likely originates from Page County in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Measuring 11" wide from handle to handle and just over 4" in height to the top of its handles, this superb oak basket features very fine tight weaving, lovely handles, unusual delicate latches, an inside rim on which the lid rests, and an incredible undisturbed apple green painted surface. Whovever made this basket was highly skilled because this example has all the bells and whistles of a master's work. Condition is excellent with a minor break on the lid's latch probably from where it was tied with thread or string so that it could be opened and closed quickly and easily.
