Circa 1900: This 19" square pine Parcheesi gameboard features a six color paint scheme on a bright white ground and an anonymous old granny note on the back side: "Parcheesi Board Hand made by Arthur's grandpa, Joel Peck." Mr. Peck was obviously a meticulous, thoughtful, and skilled craftsman because the frame is well nailed to the single pine board to prevent it from warping and purposely integrated into the game field itself, giving the board a larger playing surface and making it seem unframed from a distance. The board exhibits expected minor shrinkage and honest play wear and is constructed with early round nails, and all of these things are typical with gameboards made around the turn of the 20th century. We love the board's soft palette and folksy country appeal, a fantastic piece of homemade American folk art created by a gentleman for his own family's use. Provenance: Ex Ron and Penny Dionne collection.
