Circa 1865: Measuring approximately 9.5"H (including stationary handle) x 8.5"W x 6.75"D and signed on top in mustard paint "H.B. Ostrom / Manufacturer / Angola N.Y. / Patented March 14 1865 / By D.L. Jaques," this ingenious and unusual piece of dated Civil War era lighting doubles as both a buggy lamp and a foot warmer, depending on the passenger's needs. The lamp is in excellent condition with applied porcelain tacks and original red and mustard paint stenciling over its brown painted ground. This is a very attractive example of early American lighting and relates to the post Civil War era when inventors were creating objects that served mulitiple purposes and could be cross marketed to consumers as money saving devices.
