Circa Mid 20th Century: Because of its chunky curved back, this large 16" long canvasback hen decoy in original paint most probably hails from Wisconsin. This folksy decoy has small glass eyes and a detailed carved beak. The body is carved from a single piece of wood, and the head is applied probably with dowel construction and is covered at the contact point with its original coat of putty, which is still mostly undisturbed. There is some typical minor crackling to the paint, and one small hole is drilled in the flat bottom of the duck, which at one time held its weight system. Obviously, this decoy was hunted over but has survived in excellent condition.
