Circa 1870s: Southern merchant jars are considered downright rare, and this hefty 12.5" blue decorated storage jar made in Baltimore for Charlotte, North Carolina crock merchant James Harty is a fine example of the advertising jars sold in Charlotte during the post Civil War reconstruction period. In fact, James Harty ran the city's only crock shop after the war ended and the nation began to mend. Condition is generally excellent with a shallow bottom flake and some typical minor rim and shoulder nicks and no cracks, repairs, or major chips. These jars don't come to the open market very often; so this is a great opportunity to own a nice piece of 19th century North Carolina history.
