Circa 2nd Quarter 20th Century: This 41.5" x 10.5" Locks and Canals 66 sign with early plastic reflective lettering most probably is from Lock 66 of Maryland's Chesapeake and Ohio Canal that stretches nearly 185 miles from Georgetown to Cumberland. The canal was completed in 1850 and was used commercially until 1924 when it fell victim to a disastrous flood. The US government bought the canal in 1938 and began restoration in the ensuing years. This interesting C & O Canal sign is painted black, has a mitered frame, and is applied with early plastic reflective letters so that passing travelers could read it at night. The sign has typical paint loss and loss to the K one one side of the sign, but it survives in excellent condition.
