Circa 1840-1880: Measuring 8.5"D x 6"H, this fine one gallon salt glazed bowl is impressed "John Bell / Waynesboro" and has eight classic Bell cobalt leaves encircling it. Bell was a master potter and threw many different forms for his clientele, and this handsome bowl with its attractive rounded body and practical flat rim is a perfect example of Bell's expert craftsmanship and ability to combine aesthetics with usability. The bowl is in excellent condition with minor expected nicking and light wear around the rim from gentle use and no cracks, repairs, or significant chips. It's a great piece of Pennsylvania stoneware from the northern tier of the Shenandoah Valley. Provenance: Ex Ronald E. Hammer collection.
