Circa 1820s: One of the scarcer American views (produced on only two forms) from Enoch Wood & Sons' seminal Shell Border, Circular Center historical Staffordshire series is Tappan Bay from Greensburg (also known as Tappan Zee from Greensburg), and this petite 8 3/4" x 6 7/16" rectangular vegetable dish is a hard one to find. This Hudson River scene with the Catskill Mountains in the background is remembered, as explained by R.T. Haines Halsey on page 185 of Pictures of Early New York on Dark Blue Staffordshire Pottery (Dover Publications, 1974), because of "the prominence given to Greensburg at about the time the sketch was made, for here it was that Isaac Van Wart, one of the captors of Major André, was buried in 1828." This rare small serving bowl has survived in excellent condition with two very minor imperfections on the side of the rim, some typical light utensil marks, and no other chips, cracks, or repairs.
