Circa 1820s: When Revolutionary War hero General Marquis de Lafayette landed on American shores in 1824 for his two year victory tour of the United States, he became wildy popular with our nation's citizens, and even the English potteries produced wares bearing the French genaral's image for the American market. One of the more famous American historical Staffordshire views depicts the Lafayette in repose at Ben Franklin's tomb at Christ Church Burial Ground in Philadelphia. This unusual 4 1/2"H x 9 3/8"D large footed serving bowl is in superb as made condition with only minor factory firing anomolies and no chips, cracks, or repairs. The transfer itself is dark and clear, making this a stunning example of this desirable 200 year old American view in a seldomly found form in the same condition as the day it was lifted from the kiln.
