Circa 1822-1835: Manufactured for the American market by English ceramicist Joseph Stubbs, this handsome 12 3/8" x 10 1/4" medium blue platter of Hoboken in New Jersey is from the potter's popular spread eagle border series, which depicts various American views surrounded by a border of patriotic bald eagles interspersed between lush floral sprays. This hard to find American view is adapted from an 1808 engraving entitled "Hoboken in New Jersey, the Seat of Mr. John Stevens" by William Russell Birch (1755-1834). The Library Company of Philadelphia's website explains that "the mansion, Stevens Villa," was "completed in 1787 near the Hudson River on the estate (Hoboken) of Colonel John Stevens III, renowned inventor of steamboats and railroads. The seat, purchased by Stevens in 1784, (initially developed as a summer resort) became incorporated as the city of Hoboken in 1855. In 1859, Stevens's sons replaced Stevens Villa with Stevens Castle." This extremely scarce platter is in superb condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs and only typical short knife marks on the front and expected minor shelf wear on the back. Ex Routson Collection
