Circa 1820s: Because the decorators at the English potteries in the early 19th century were largely illiterate, sometimes pieces were mismarked as the decorators could not read the marks. Such is the case with this rare dark blue 6.5" Enoch Wood & Sons plate from the circular shell border series. The plate depicts Highlands at West Point, Hudson River but is stamped "High Lands Hudson River Near Newburgh" on the reverse, giving this scarce view only produced on the 6.5" plate a little extra punch. This terrific American view is in superb condition with no chip, cracks, or repairs and only a bit of minor roughness on on the edge. It looks as though this 200-year-old bread plate was hardly, if ever, used.
