Lafayette's Landing Covered Vegetable Dish

Circa 1820s: Certainly the most popular and lasting dark blue historical Staffordshire transferware pattern created for the American market by English brothers James and Ralph Clews is The Landing of General Lafayette At Castle Garden, New York, 16 August, 1824, which celebrates the starting point of the heroic French general's first visit to the United States since his historic leadership in the American Revolutionary War nearly fifty years earlier. The pattern was so loved by the American people that Clews manufactured it a bevy os shapes, one of the most spectacular being the covered vegetable dish, which measures 6.25" tall including lid, 12.25" wide including its ample tab handles, and 10.25" in depth. This piece has a very complex transfer with its base being decorated inside and out and its lid fully covered, including its robust hand-painted finial. Condition is absolutely superb essentially as fired condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs, clear transfers, and only typical firing anomalies as made. This nearly 200-year-old covered vegetable dish comes from the storied Routson collection, and it will be difficult to find a cleaner example.
