Circa 1850-1875: Fulton, New York potter Samuel Hart is most remembered for the graphic and instantly recognizable lovebirds decoration: a pair of prancing songbirds with their chests out and beaks pointing toward the sky. This 10"H x 10.75"D three gallon straight sided pickles or sauerkraut crock has a vibrant depiction of Hart's signature lovebirds, has some extra punch with the freehand double three capacity, and has a clearly stamped "S. Hart / Fulton" mark highlighted with cobalt slashes. This handsome piece of New York stoneware is in excellent condition with one shallow base flake, some typical minor interior wear and no cracks or repairs.
