Circa 1870: Although the Greensboro, Pennsylvania, firm of Hamilton and Jones, partnered by Frank Hamilton and John Jones, was in business from 1866-1897, this stunning two gallon jar was most probably thrown in the first decade of the company's long 31 year tenure when the Greene County pottery's most highly decorated stoneware was fired in the kiln. This jar features fantastic contrast and bright blue cobalt and is painted top to bottom in a pleasing combination of freehand and stencil decoration, including stripes, leaf and vine, squiggly lines, desirable large block lettering, and a stenciled 2 flanked by scarce leaf stencils. On top of that, the crock is in completely as made condition with only typical firing anomalies and no chips, cracks, or repairs. One would have to travel a lot of miles to find a Southwestern Pennsylvania stoneware jar of this caliber on the open market, and this one can be shipped right to your front door.
