Circa 1880: This historically significant and possibly unique 9 5/8" slip script redware plate reads "Hancock for Ever!" and was produced on the occasion of the beloved Union Civil War General Winfield Scott Hancock's 1880 bid for the presidency against James A. Garfield, who would be assassinated in 1881. According to redware scholar Justin Thomas, this politcal plate was more than likely potted in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, by Simon Singer or one of his employees. Singer's slip script plates are scarce and desirable, and this example with Montgonery County, Pennsylvania native Hancock's Demoractic party campaign slogan emblazoned across its face makes it museum worthy to say the least. This plate has three hairlines and a rim chip, but these condition issues are minor considering the object's extreme rarity and noteworthy historical value. Until recently, the plate had been hidden in a private family collection since the 1930s and is now on the open market for the first time in 90 years.
