Circa 1870s-1880s: Batter jugs are in high demand by today's stoneware collectors, and this highly decorated example potted by the Pittson, Pennsylvania's Evan R. Jones retains its original lid, spout cap, and bail handle and is in excellent essentially as made condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs and only typical firing anomalies, including a heavy coating of salt on the rear side. Jones purchased the Luzerne County pottery in 1870 and died in 1880, leaving the pottery in the hands of his widow Sarah. After Sarah's death in 1882, the highly successful pottery was run by E.J. Sovereign, manager of the Sarah Jones estate, until it was sold in 1887 to Lewis Jones. This handsomely decorated batter jug has great contrast, has survived in remarkable condition with no apologies.
