Circa Early 19th Century: Housed in a beautiful 17.25"H x 15"W carved gilt frame, this exquisite early 19th century British silk and needlework portrait of two children (most probably siblings) navigating their way across a wooded stream is of the foremost quality. The needlework is extremely well done with a myriad of different stitches, colors, and thicknesses of expensive thread, including metallic varieties, all giving the scene a realistic three dimensional feel. This is an example of a needlework that was sent to a highly skilled professional artist who finished the work by painting the background and the children's portraits. The scene is both charming and educational: a recently breeched lad politely and lovingly securing a board so that his barefoot sister can cross the creek safely. Condition is superb with minor imperfections. Needlework portraiture doesn't get much better than this.
