Circa 1880: Created by East Hampton, Connecticut's famed Gong Bell Manufacturing Company, this beefy 9.25" long Ding Dong Bell / Pussy's Not in the Well cast iron bell toy depicts a cheerful couple and their beloved white cat, who, thankfully, is not trapped in the well. Versions of "Ding Dong Bell" can be traced back as far as 16th century England and the phrase is even referenced in a couple of Shakespeare's plays. It is believed that this verse is one of the earliest references speaking out against cruelty to animals. When the toy is rolled along the ground, the bell chimes in celebration of the cat's well being. This fantastic bell toy is in superb original paint with no touch ups, chips, cracks, or repairs and is the perfect toy for the pet lover in all of us. Ex. Schroeder Collection
