1 Gallon Northeastern Ovoid Jug Dated 1826

Circa 1826: Collectors love dated stoneware, and it's not easy to find dated examples this early, especially in essentially as made condition with only typical firing anomalies and no chips, cracks, or repairs! This handsome one gallon jug stands just over 11" tall and sports a heavy coat of salt glazing, an 1826 date scrawled across the top front with added daubs of cobalt on either end of the handle, a tooled spout, rim, and handle, and a strip on the bottom where it sat on a single piece of kiln furniture during the firing process. We are not sure of the maker of this jug, but there is a bevy of ongoing research in the field of early American northeastern stoneware. Stoneware scholars study these mentioned charateristics (and more) to help determine region, maker, and date, and this nearly 200 year old jug is certain to get identified sooner or later. When that happens, prices escalate. Although we feel sure this piece will prove to be a good investment, the best criterion for buying stoneware (or any other antique) is that you love it, and we think this beautiful jug is one to adore.
