Circa 1820s: Branch Green is famous for his coggle wheel decoration, and this petite 7" tall one quart storage jar features Green's iconic fish and hatchling motif, which most probably portrays sturgeon and their young, the cobalt wash symbolizing the river where the fish reproduce. Whether this jar was potted in Philadelphia PA, Old Bridge NJ, or New York's Mid Hudson River Valley region is a matter of scholarly contention and demands further research, but both this decoration and this jar form have long been attributed to Branch Green's stoneware production. Condition is nearly as made with some very indistinct nicking and no other damage, and the liberal salt glazing gives this small 200-year-old storage jar a beautiful shine that makes it look as though it had just been pulled from the kiln.
