Circa 1920s: The Swiss have long been known for technical innovation, and the August and Cie Bucherer Company of Amriswil, Switzerland, produced a fabulous line of metal fully movable metal jointed dolls with composition hands and changeable composition heads. The line included famous film celebrities and comic characters and a long array of occupational figures marketed under the brand name SABA. Today, collectors use the names SABA and Bucherer interchangeably when referring to these instantly recognizable dolls.
Measuring 8" tall, this Bucherer Charlie Chaplin doll is in excellent gently played with condition with typical light loss to the paint, minimal crazing to the composition, and usual age spotting and wear to the clothing, all as photographed. The body is fully movable and can be set in a remarkable number of positions, all thanks to exceptional Swiss ingenuity.
