Circa 1835-1838: Here is a very rare example of a beautiful 9.25" tall Clarkson Crolius Sr. one gallon jar with tabbed, rather than open, handles. This great ovoid crock bears the stamp "C. Crolius / Manufacturer / New York" surrounded by an oval. Clarkson Sr's final stamp is known to have an oval and also contain the words "Manhattan Wells," and Clarkson Jr., whose stamps do not contain those words, was not known to use an oval. Clarkson Sr. potted until 1838, and Clarkson Jr. began in 1835, leaving a three year transition period when both father and son acted as owners of the family business, and this oddly marked jar most probably comes from that gap. This jar is in excellent nearly as made condition with one minor flake on the inside rim and no other chips, cracks, or repairs.
