Circa 1864-1867: This 14" tall three gallon salt glazed storage crock clearly stamped "Boughner Greensboro PA" features exuberant top to bottom freehand cobalt decoration and is in superb nearly as made condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs and only typical minor handling wear. The jar is easily attributable to Greensboro, Pennsylvania's Alexander Vance Boughner after he bought out the Southwest Pennsylvania manufactory from his brother William in 1864 because the stamp lacks the typical "A & W" initials on pieces made in the 1852-1864 era when the brothers were business partners. This is a superb example of late production stoneware from A.V. Boughner, the final member of Greensboro's first family of potters to ply his trade at the wheel.
