James Hamilton & Co. 5 Gallon Storage Jar

Circa 1870: This beefy 15" tall five gallon storage jar is decorated top to bottom with two stripes, four groupings of Hamilton's classic rose stencil, a stenciled 5 gallon capacity mark, and a "Jas. Hamilton / & Co. / Greensboro, Pa." stencil in large block letters. The rich, brilliant cobalt application contrasts beautifully against the jar's light gray salt glazed body, and condition is excellent with one interior rim flake, some minor nibbles on the back side's shoulder molding, and other firing anomalies as made with no cracks or repairs. This combination of profuse decoration, great contrast, and superb condition is what Southwestern Pennsylvania stoneware collectors want, and this large and visually appealing storage crock from one of Greensboro's leading potters most certainly fits the bill.
