Circa 1850: Measuring 6.25" tall and 11" in diameter (including lid and handles), this handsome one gallon cobalt decorated Baltimore cake crock was most probably made by Peter Herrmann or one of his local cohorts. The lidded cake crock is one of the most desirable forms among today's stoneware collectors as they fit in perfectly with country primitive or farmhouse decor, and this one is in excellent condition with a chip on the lid's finial and a few typical very minor flakes on the crock and no cracks or repairs on either piece. This is a gorgeous cake crock with classic the Mid-Atlantic winglike handles (seen most often in Baltimore and Virginia) and floral decoration on both sides.
