Circa 1826-1838: One of the most sought after dark blue historical Staffordshire transferware series is English potter Thomas Mayer's Arms of the American States. This 8.5" luncheon plate depicts Arms of the State of Rhode Island with its great anchor under the festoon of Hope and is adorned on the back with Mayer's impressed mark. The Rhode Island plate is probably the most often found piece in this desirable series, but all of the views are hard to come by and quickly gobbled up by collectors. This plate is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs and typical light utensil marks on the front and expected light shelf ware on the reverse.
