Circa 1870s: Stoneware manufactured for West Virginia merchants is highly sought after by today's collectors, and competition for scarce pieces is extremely competitive. Petite half gallon merchant jugs are scarce commodities, and this one made for Charleston, West Virginia, wholesale liquor dealer Ben Baer is rare. Additionally, the jug is in superb nearly as made condition with one very minor nick on the base and no other damage. This is a fine example of 19th century special order West Virginia merchant stoneware that was made in Southewestern Pennsylvania and shipped to the merchant's location.
