Circa 1820s: Good things come in small packages. This incredible one pint snuff of tobacco jar attributed to early American potter Branch Green's Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, production stands a mere hair over 5" tall and 4" in diameter at the widest point. The jar cants slightly inward and has a bottom diameter of 3.75", and its approximately 3" diameter wide-mouthed lip could either be sealed with a cork or tied off with cheese cloth and twine. This ingeniously decorated jar features a full 360 degrees floral landscape complete with three double-stemmed flowers and cobalt brush strokes representing the earth below and, on the jar's lip, the sky above. Condition is outstanding with one very minute nick on the lip and no other damage. This is a one-of-a-kind rarity for the stoneware collector who has everything.
