Circa 1st Quarter 20th Century: This unusual early 20th century folk art sheet metal beaver weathervane in originial naturally weathered green paint measures an ample 32.5" long by 14.25" tall including its custom made museum stand. The sheet metal vane has an ingenious five piece cut out construction held together by rivets and solder, which give the tail and rear leg a full-bodied feel. The naively rendered facial features and clawed feet, along with the vane's surprising original hunter green paint, complete the beaver's fantastically folksy appeal. Images of the beaver in this type of pose are found on along both sides the Quebec/Vermont border; so this visually striking homemade weathervane most probably is from this region and could be of either American or Canadian origin. Condition is excellent with a few expected in use minor bends. This is a beautiful one-of-a-kind piece of early 20th century folk art in a scarce and desirable form.
