Circa 1830: Blue decorated stoneware marked "T O Goodwin W Hartford" and potted by West Hartford, Connecticut's Thomas O'Hara Goodwin (1796-1880) is diffficult to come by, and this beautiful three gallon ovoid jug is a fine example of this elusive potter's output. The Goodwin family was rife with potters, including Thomas's father Seth Goodwin, who produced early Connecticut redware, and Thomas's uncle Horace Goodwin, partner in the famous Harford stoneware manufactory Goodwin and Webster. T. O. Goodwin practiced his craft at the corner of New Britain and New Park Avenues in West Hartford. This rare cobalt decorated jug remains in superb as made condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs and only in the making firing anomalies, looking just as it did 190 years ago when it was fresh from the kiln.
