Circa 1920-1940: Standing 10 3/4" and 11 3/8" tall on fancy bases, this beautiful pair of original five color paint decorated tulip poplar carvings of a smiling couple with articulated arms (similar to the period's whirligigs) is a fantastic example of early 20th century naive folk art. The couple's hair and clothing parallel styles that were prominent in the 1920s and 30s, and their matching paint, construction methods, and facial features show they were made by the same anonymous hand and have probably been together since their creation. Condition is excellent with a crack to the gentleman's proper left shoe and minor paint loss to both figures commensurate with age and use. Provenance: Heller-Washam Antiques, Dr. Carole Wahler
