Circa 1840-1870: Measuring 4 1/2"H x 11 1/2"W x 7 5/8"D, this exuberantly painted apple box features a unique and striking rosewood grain painted ground with yellow pinstriping, dog, butterfly and vining flower theorem-like decorations. The box's unusual rectangular form with canted sides and a thick one piece bottom shaped into a quarter rounded foot adds sophistication to its powerfully graphic decoration. Made of poplar and constructed with small hand cut square nails, this fine folk art apple box is in excellent condition with expected age related paint and edge wear and the beautiful patinated surface we love to find on mid 19th century country antiques.
