Circa 1880s: Notoriously difficult to find in excellent original paint, the scarce Tabby Bank portrays a cat sitting atop an egg with an emerging chick. Depending on one's perspective, this interesting mechanical bank either has huge egg or a very tiny cat! When the coin is dropped into the slot on the tabby's back, the chick nods. This bank was offered with red, yellow, and blue bases, and this example has a far nicer red base than the one pictured on page 306 of Dan Morphy's Official Guide to Mechanical Banks (Random House 2007). Although the Tabby Bank officially is of unknown manufacture, most leading scholars in the bank community believe it was produced by Kyser & Rex in Philadelphia. It has taken us twenty years to find this bank in such good condition, and we're sure the next owner will be as pleased with this Tabby as we are.
