Circa Late 19th Century: Measuring approximately 15"H (including 4"W modern museum stand) x 24.5", this factory made copper quill weathervane retains a handsome early historic working surface with verdigris patina beneath the old regilding. We don't know who made this vane, but quills were manufactured by several east coast firms, and this one is very well made with its especially attractive ribbed feather. Quill vanes were most often used on schools and libraries, places which signaled the importance of writing and literacy. Small weathervanes in this form are hard to find, and this one's size makes it a comfortable yet elegant fit into one's home or office. Provenance: Ex Dennis Raleigh
