Circa 1st Quarter 20th Century: With its arms extended, this incredible folk art boxer whirligig stands close to 15" tall including its original base. The black, white and gray paint scheme is also completely original. The whirligig is hand carved with sheet metal arms that were originally applied with screws both to protect its delicate wooden paddles and to add width to the arms in order to make them function better in the wind. The boxer himself is well carved with slightly bent knees and delineated buttocks and spine, and his facial features even include a veteran boxer's cauliflower ears and a flattened nose. When the boxer's arms spun in the breeze, one could imagine this champion throwing endless combinations at a punchdrunk opponent.
