Circa 1840s: This petite 7.75" tall impressed half gallon storage crock features four dark blue horizontally flowers circling the jar's entirety. The capacity mark is shown on page 331 of Eddie Wilder's Alexandria, Virginia Pottery 1792-1876 (Wadsworth Publishing Company 2007), and several pieces in the book show this decoration; so this great little jar was definitely made at Alexandria's celebrated Wilkes Street pottery. Crocker Farm notes that "most pieces of this style were made by Benedict C. Milburn at his Wilkes Street pottery for merchant Hugh Charles Smith." The jar is in very good condition with a minor short tight line at lip, three minor flakes, no repairs, and other factory firing anomolies as made. This a beautiful example of Northern Virginia stoneware.
