Circa 1890s: This handsome two gallon stoneware jug is an advertisement for Louis P. Frobe's liquor store at 1041 Market Street in Wheeling, West Virginia. Frobe took over sole ownership of the establishment from his mother in May of 1892 and became one of the city's most successful merchants. This jug stands 14.5" tall and is in excellent condition with one minor spout chip and no other damage. The dark cobalt stencil and freehand decoration is clear and readable, contrasting nicely against the jug's stippled coloration. This is the first Louis P. Frobe piece we have had the pleasure of offering, and it's a good clean example of the wares Frome commisioned for his quickly burgeoning business.
