Circa 1890-1895: Double handled stoneware jugs from Southwestern Pennsylvania are an extremely hot commodity in today's market, and this approximately 20.5" tall freehand stencil decorated example from New Geneva's storied potter Robert T. Williams, who was murdered in 1895 at the top of his career, is in completely original condition, including the handles, which are so often repaired or replaced, and the beautifully shaped spout, which is often damaged. Condition is excellent with no chips, cracks, or repairs and superb contrast with nice dark blue cobalt. It is highly unusual to find this desirable form in essentially as fired condition, excluding some extremely minor glaze wear to the spout lip, with no breaks or repairs, and this is a tall and attractive example to boot.
