Circa 1900: This small 6.75" x 5.5" paint decorated Grand Army of the Republic canteen is a souvenir from the 34th Annual National Encampment, which took place August 26-30, 1900, on State Street in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The reunion's slogan, "we drank from the same canteen," was drawn from a poem by Miles O'Reilly published in Hardtack and Coffee, John D. Billings' seminal Civil War tome. The graphically decorated canteen is in original condition with minor expected wear to the paint and even retains its orginal stopper and fancy multi-colored rope handle.
