1820s Canaryware Tankard with Hand Painted Floral Decoration

Circa 1820s: This hefty canary yellow tankard, a giant in its day, stands nearly 5" tall and is the size of a modern coffee mug. Two distinct hand painted floral sprays adorn opposite sides of the pictured early 19th century tankard that also boasts a paint decorated rim and handle. Inexpensive and colorful, English soft paste ceramics manufactured for the American market in the first half of the 1800s were meant for daily use in our vastly expanding young nation, and these ceramics took quite a beating. Today, it is extremely difficult to find soft paste (canaryware, historical Staffordshire, gaudy Dutch, mochaware, etc.) in presentable condition. This beautiful canary tankard comes to you in superb condition with one very minor nick on the inside rim (see the fifth photo), a little typical wear to the paint on the top rim, and two nothing nicks on the bottom's dry foot. We're positive this will be an outstanding addition to any collection of early ceramics.
