Circa 1852-1864: This 12" tall two gallon salt glazed storage crock is easily attributable to brothers Alexander and William Boughner, sons of Daniel Boughner, Greensboro, Pennsylvania's first potter. The floral sprays between the thick cobalt stripes are classic unmistakable Boughner decor, and the tooled center lines and distinctive 2 seal the attribution. Boughner pieces are extremely desirable to Southwestern Pennsylvania stoneware collectors, and this is a fine example of Boughner family crockery. It has some typical staining, one minor nick on the top rim, and a very tight crow's foot on the bottom that comes up an inch or so from the bottom rim, but this minor line has no effect on the jar's structural integrity or visual beauty and will be an excellent addition to one's collection.
