Circa Late 19th Century: We have handled a lot of gameboards, but we have never come upon another hand painted checkers games with pink and white squares. Made by a a professional carriage maker, this large 20 1/8"H x 27"W highly graphic eight-color checkerboard was most probably commissioned as a gift to a lady with its feminine squares, its beautifully painted floral sprays, its two-tone blue background, and its multi-colored pinstriping. Additionally, the poplar board also has a mitered frame and early round nail construction. The finely crazed surface is exactly as expected. The one apology this board has is a tight old age crack that runs its length but does not affect the board structurally or visually. This extremely artistic and complexly rendered checkers board is unusual in both size and color palette and will make a fine addition to one's collection.
