Rare Patriotic Rocking Eagle Cast Iron Bell Toy

Circa 4th Quarter 19th Century: In their seminal 1980 volume American Antique Toys 1830-1900, Bernard Barenholtz and Inez McClintock showcase the rocking eagle bell toy and note on page 55 and assert that "rocking bell toys are very unusual; very few other figures were used in this manner." They also note that their example of this interesting patriotic toy has a blue rocker, which suggests, as the rocker on our example is in original red paint, that the rockers were painted in at least two colors. Barenholtz and McClintock do not speculate on the maker of the toy, but it is now attributed to W. E. Barton of East Hampton, Connecticut. This wonderful piece of patriotic americana is a mere 5" in length, and it comes to you in a completely original and untouched painted surface. Ex. Paul Cole Collection
